HERITAGE RITUAL

Heritage Rituals are the living foundation of Lavana
the origin of our creations and the spirit that breathes life into every ritual we craft.

Rooted in traditional botanical wisdom and ancestral bathing practices from across Asia, these rituals preserve the cultural heritage of herbal healing and sacred self-care.

Setaman Ritual Cleansing The Javanese tradition of floral purification

In Javanese tradition, the word Setaman refers to more than a collection of flowers.
It evokes the image of a harmonious garden — a space where water, fragrance, and nature come together to restore balance within the human body.

For generations, this floral bathing practice has been performed during moments of transition — such as before weddings, after illness, or when seeking inner renewal.
The ritual is not merely about cleansing the body, but about restoring harmony between mind, body, and spirit.

In traditional practices,
Setaman bathing incorporates seven different flowers, symbolizing the purification of
the seven openings of the human body (Sapta Rengga) —
the pathways through which humans perceive and interact with the world.
In ceremonial preparations — particularly before marriage rituals — the cleansing may also include the application of
four herbal body masks, each represented by a different color:
• White — Water
• Yellow — Air
• Red — Fire
• Black — Earth
These colors symbolize the Four Sedulur (Sedulur Papat) —
elemental companions representing the fundamental forces that accompany human life.

Through fragrance, water, and natural elements,
the Setaman ritual invites a return to balance —
allowing the body to release what is no longer needed
and preparing the spirit for a new beginning.

Ayom Ritual Cleansing Sacred Protection Ritual with three sacred flower

Rooted in ancient Javanese spiritual tradition, Ayom is a sacred floral ritual prepared with Kembang Telon — the three ceremonial flowers of Rose, Jasmine, and Cananga (Ylang Ylang). For generations, these flowers have been used in rituals of spiritual cleansing, protection, and divine alignment.
In the traditional sequence of purification, Setaman is performed first to cleanse the body and release stagnant or negative energies. Once the body and spirit are purified, Ayom follows as a ritual of connection and protection.

connection and protection.

The fragrant harmony of Kembang Telon is believed to invite higher spiritual presence,
helping the body and soul align with the sacred principle known in Javanese philosophy as
Manunggaling Kawulo Gusti — the union between the human self
and the Divine.
Through this ritual, the body is gently surrounded by the subtle
energy of sacred flowers, creating a space where clarity, protection,
and inner balance can naturally arise.

The ritual does not only cleanse what is heavy or unseen, but also
strengthens the spiritual boundary of the body, allowing one to move
through life with greater harmony and protection

At Lavana Herbal, the Ayom ritual honours this heritage practice by
preserving the traditional composition of Kembang Telon,
allowing the timeless wisdom of Javanese floral rituals
to continue as a path toward
spiritual purification, protection, and divine connection.

Marpangir Ritual Cleansing The ‘Batak’ - Full Moon Cleansing Ritual

Originating from the spiritual traditions of the Batak people of North Sumatra, Marpangir is a sacred herbal cleansing ritual traditionally performed to purify the body, restore energetic balance, and reconnect the individual with ancestral guidance.

This ritual is often carried out during the full moon, a time long regarded in many Indonesian traditions as a moment when natural energies reach their peak. During this phase, the ritual supports a deeper process of energetic cleansing within the personal space surrounding the body, often described as the human vibrational field.

Marpangir works beyond physical cleansing. Through the use of fragrant herbs and sacred plants, the ritual gently re-aligns the body’s energy, helping it reconnect with both ancestral wisdom and divine presence.

In Batak tradition, this reconnection is essential for maintaining harmony between the individual, the unseen spiritual world, and the natural environment.

By clearing stagnant or heavy energy from the personal space of the body, Marpangir creates a state of renewed clarity and alignment. The ritual becomes a moment of spiritual recalibration, guiding the individual back into balance with both ancestral lineage and universal life energy.

At Lavana Herbal, Marpangir is honoured as a living heritage ritual that reflects the deep spiritual knowledge of Indonesia’s indigenous traditions —
a reminder that purification is not only about cleansing the body, but also about realigning the self with ancestral roots and divine harmony

Balimau Ritual Cleansing The Melayu Heritage for Ritual of Purification and Renewal

Originating from longstanding bathing traditions across Eastern Sumatera, Balimau is a sacred cleansing ritual traditionally performed to purify the body, refresh the senses, and prepare the individual for a state of renewed clarity and spiritual awareness.

This ritual is traditionally carried out using water infused with natural citrus and fragrant herbal elements, ingredients long regarded in local traditions for their cleansing and revitalising qualities. Through this preparation, the ritual supports a deeper process of purification within the personal space surrounding the body, often understood as the human energetic field.

Balimau works beyond physical cleansing. Through the refreshing properties of citrus and herbal waters, the ritual gently clears accumulated heaviness, allowing the body’s natural energy to return to a balanced and harmonious state.

In traditional understanding, this process helps the individual reconnect with a sense of inner clarity and natural alignment. By washing away stagnant or unsettled energy from the body and its surrounding space, Balimau creates a state of renewal and lightness. The ritual becomes a moment of conscious transition, guiding the individual toward balance, awareness, and spiritual readiness.

At Lavana Herbal, Balimau is honoured as part of Indonesia’s living heritage of ritual bathing traditions — a reminder that purification is not only about cleansing the body, but also about
restoring clarity of the spirit and harmony within the flow of life.

Batangeh Ritual Cleansing Minangkabau Herbal Ritual of Energetic Balance

Batangeh is a traditional herbal purification ritual originating from the Minangkabau culture of West Sumatra. For generations, this ritual has been practiced as a form of deep energetic recalibration, helping the body return to its natural state of balance and harmony.

Prepared with a blend of aromatic herbs and sacred plants, Batangeh works through gentle heat and herbal steam to encourage the body to release accumulated tension and stagnant energy. In traditional understanding, the ritual allows the body’s natural energy to recalibrate and flow in alignment with its original rhythm.

Beyond physical relaxation, Batangeh is regarded as a ritual that invites the body, mind, and soul to remember their origin—
reconnecting the individual with the deeper source of life and inner awareness.

Through this process, the ritual supports a state of grounding, clarity, and renewed vitality.

In the Minangkabau tradition, maintaining balance within the body’s energy is essential for living in harmony with nature and the spiritual world.

Batangeh therefore becomes more than a herbal bath; it is a moment of restoration, reflection, and realignment.

At Lavana Herbal, Batangeh is honoured as a timeless heritage ritual of West Sumatra, preserving the wisdom of traditional Indonesian herbal practices that nurture balance within the body, clarity within the mind, and harmony within the soul.

Lalandong Ritual Cleansing The Sundanese Sensory Awakening Bath

Batangeh is a traditional herbal purification ritual originating from the Minangkabau culture of West Sumatra. For generations, this ritual has been practiced as a form of deep energetic recalibration, helping the body return to its natural state of balance and harmony.

Prepared with a blend of aromatic herbs and sacred plants, Batangeh works through gentle heat and herbal steam to encourage the body to release accumulated tension and stagnant energy. In traditional understanding, the ritual allows the body’s natural energy to recalibrate and flow in alignment with its original rhythm.

Historically, Lalandong bathing was practiced as part of daily life and moments of spiritual preparation within  undanese communities of West Java.

Herbal waters infused with aromatic plants and flowers were used notonly for  cleansing the body, but also for restoring clarity of the senses and calming the inner state.

Through this practice, individuals were believed to reconnect with the natural rhythms of the surrounding environment while gently guiding the body and mind back toward balance and internal harmony.

At Lavana Herbal, Lalandong is preserved as a heritage ritual of sensory awakening. Inspired by the ancient Sundanese wisdom of
West Java, this botanical bath forms a ritual practice for restoring equilibrium between the senses, the body, and the surrounding
natural world.

Hmong Ritual Cleansing Vietnamese Herbal Renewal Bath

Originating from the mountainous regions of northern Vietnam, the Hmong herbal bathing ritual is a traditional practice deeply rooted in the herbal knowledge of the Hmong people.

For generations, this Vietnamese herbal bath ritual has been used as a way to cleanse the body, restore vitality, and bring the body and mind back into balance through the power of aromatic forest botanicals.

Within the Hmong herbal bathing tradition, a variety of leaves, roots, and flowers are gathered from the surrounding mountains and slowly infused in hot water to create a deeply fragrant herbal bath. The rising herbal steam and warm infusion help relax the body, awaken the senses, and restore physical and emotional equilibrium. These baths were traditionally prepared during moments of transition — after long journeys, periods of exhaustion, or times when renewal of strength and clarity was needed.

Our interpretation of this heritage ritual draws inspiration from the use of Vietnam Blue Lotus, a botanical long associated across Asia with calm awareness and sensory awakening.
Distinct from the Egyptian variety, the Asian Blue Lotus has been traditionally valued in many regional herbal practices for its gentle aromatic qualities and its ability to quiet the mind while softening the body.

At Lavana Herbal, the Hmong bath is preserved within our bathing tradition as an Asian herbal ritual bath, combining the wisdom of Vietnamese mountain herbalism with
our philosophy of restoring equilibrium through water, botanicals, and the awakening of the senses.
